In 1959, during a visit to the Soviet Union, Vice President Richard M. Nixon enered into an impromptu debate with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev on the merits of American capitalism versus Soviet communism. The confrontation became known as the "Kitchen Debate" because it took place in a meodel kitchen at a U.S. exhibition.
